Since the family was first introduced to Japanese Jiu-Jitsu in 1915, the Gracie family revolutionized the world of combat sports through it's development of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, which later became known internationally as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Carlos Gracie was one of the first individuals in the Gracie family who became proficient in Japanese Jiu-Jitsu, eventually teaching it to his younger siblings. One of these siblings, Helio Gracie, would eventually go on to work with Carlos to develop the Jiu-Jitsu into what is now known as Gracie Jiu-Jitsu.

After years of training within the household and with close friends, the Gracie family began to develop notoriety within Brazil and began to enter the spotlight of Luta Livre and would eventually help the family gain renown across the country, leading Helio to become the first national sports hero in Brazilian history.

This rise in popularity for this unique martial art that the family had developed help them gain lots of traction when starting the original Gracie Jiu Jitsu Academy in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1925
